Almenrunde

Hiking made easy, with plenty of ‘Yippee!’ moments and the odd Gesäuse gem – that’s the Almenrunde, and it’s a big hit with families and those new to the Gesäuse. The mighty Gesäuse mountains may surround you, but they don’t intimidate anyone, as you’re walking through the beautiful green alpine pastures. With hiking boots on your feet and plenty of provisions and water in your rucksack, you set off from the Ebnerkreuzung car park in Johnsbach and make your way from one alpine hut to the next.

Almenhopping

Whether it’s cheese dumpling soup, meat strudel or farmhouse doughnuts, each of the four alpine huts serves up homemade regional delicacies that taste particularly good in the rustic alpine atmosphere. But it’s not just the cuisine that makes a visit to the idyllic Johnsbach alpine pastures worthwhile. Breathtaking views of the Gesäuse mountains, trees completely covered in moss and the Teufelsklamm gorge with its bizarre rock formations make the trip an unforgettable experience for young and old alike.

The Alpine huts

The Johnsbach Almenrunde is a grand tribute to the joys of life. Not only because its gentle ups and downs make it accessible to everyone – men and women, young and old alike – but also because you can stop off at no fewer than four mountain huts along the way. Can? Must!

Maps

What makes the Johnsbach Almenrunde so special is that you can decide for yourself how far you want to go; the individual sections can be adapted to suit your fitness level.

From the Ebneralm car park, for example, the Kölblalm can be reached in just 40 minutes’ walk. Following a wide forest track, past rustic wooden figures and the Teufelsklamm gorge, you’ll reach the first of four alpine huts on the Johnsbach Alpine Trail in no time at all. Here you can treat yourself to some homemade apple cake or cider, and then either take the longer route to the Huberalm or opt for one of the two shorter routes to the Zeiringeralm or Ebneralm. It’s not just because you can change your plans on the spur of the moment that the Johnsbach Almenrunde is particularly popular with families.

What the view of the Gesäuse mountains is to the adults, the prospect of a tinglingly sweet ‘Gesäuseperle’ is to the children.
