This is a challenging mountain tour, which requires surefootedness and a head for heights. The ascent and descent requires some strenght and coordination and should therefore not be underestimated. The tour is therefore not to be underestimated!

Coming from Judenburg via Unzmarkt to Scheifling. Turn right and drive to Murau. In Katsch an der Mur keep right and drive to St. Peter am Kammersberg. Here turn right again and drive via Pöllau am Greim into the Eselsberg to the Hölzlerhütte or Knollihütte.
Coming from Tamsweg keep left via Ranten and drive via Schöder to St. Peter am Kammersberg. Here turn left again and drive via Pöllau am Greim into the Eselsberg to the Hölzlerhütte or Knollihütte.
The starting point is the Hölzlerhütte in the Eselsberggraben.
From the hut you hike straight ahead over alpine pastures in the direction of the valley head. Shortly before the end of the valley, an ascending marked trail leads to the right in the direction of the Hochstubofen summit. This part of the trail offers a beautiful view. The path continues to climb in serpentines towards the summit. The past part of the ascent is a challenge in terms of physical condition, as it is constantly rising in scree and large stone steps to the summit cross.
The descent can be made via the Rettlkirchspitze - Funklscharte. You can follow a beautiful path back towards the Hölzerhütte or you can choose the return path via the ascent.
