Theresa Obermayer: The Suburbs - Stages
Healing suburban world with surprising depths: Theresa Obermayer questions the idyll of everyday life in her exhibition The Suburbs at the HALLE FÜR KUNST Steiermark.
Admission is free!
Everything clean, everything tidy, everything perfect – or is it? In her exhibition The Suburbs, the artist Theresa Obermayer offers an unusual perspective on the suburbs. Behind well-kept facades, closed doors, and drawn curtains, she discovers a world where not everything is as harmonious as it initially seems.
The suburbs are considered a place of longing: a home of one’s own, security, peace, and a regulated life. But what lies behind this apparent idyll? Theresa Obermayer unsettles the familiar order. She alters known elements, rearranges the everyday, and creates surprising connections. Her work plays with expectations and shows how quickly the familiar can appear foreign.
The exhibition is part of STAGES, a format of the HALLE FÜR KUNST Steiermark, which provides a platform for young, emerging artists from Graz and Styria.
In the foyer of the Kunsthaus, Obermayer's suburban world meets the vibrant visual language of Katherine Bernhardt, whose works are presented in the main exhibition. Both artists share an interest in everyday objects, bold colors, and unusual image combinations. While Bernhardt’s works embody the city, Obermayer focuses on the suburbs. The exhibition can be seen until November 29.
