Gratwein Krampus Run
The Krampus run in Gratwein features numerous Krampus and Perchten groups with impressive masks and traditional costumes, creating a fascinating cultural spectacle during Advent.
Entrance is free!
On Friday, December 5th, starting at 6:00 PM, the annual Gratwein Krampus & Perchten run will take place in the market of Gratwein-Straßengel in Styria. In the midst of the historic market street, the "hosts," the blacksmith devils of Gratwein, alongside the Gratwein source devils, will uphold the traditional customs with their impressive masks. Additionally, countless other Perchten groups will wander through the town center – around 300 Kramperl will be present in total.
A highlight will be the heavy bells, clanging chains, and intricately carved masks. It is a play of light and shadow in Advent: Amid the facades of Gratwein, loud clanging and rhythmic snapping resonate – a transition from reverent silence to lively atmosphere.
The event is limited to approximately 4,000 visitors, arriving early ensures a good spot on the edge of the route. Those who want to be part of it should arrive on time.
In the Graz Region, one does not simply witness a show during this run – it is a vibrant piece of Styrian tradition that becomes palpable in the rhythm of bells and snaps. Families are also welcome, but increased attention is advisable for small children, as the noise can be impressive.
In short: If you want to experience the Advent season in Styria with a traditional and atmospheric event, the Krampus & Perchten run in Gratwein is just the right place.
The town center of Gratwein is well accessible by public transport.
