Ein Übertritt - Gedicht von Elfriede Jelinek
Elfriede Jelinek has used the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II as an opportunity to engage with war, destruction, guilt, and the forgetting of history. As linguistically virtuosic as ever, Jelinek intertwines the historical moment of the end of the war with the potential for violence in current socio-political developments in "A Transition." War and violence never end but continue unabated in the history of humanity. With analytical wit, the Austrian Nobel laureate exposes talk of justice, new beginnings, and a "never again" as empty promises.
Elfriede Jelinek's text will have its Austrian premiere at the Schauspielhaus Graz. Directed by Victoria Halper and Kai Krösche, who are currently causing a stir in the German-speaking theater scene as the directing duo DARUM. They often work with immersive settings, both in the analog and digital spaces. Their VR evening "[EOL]. End of Life," seen in 2025 at the Berlin Theatertreffen and at the Digithalia Festival in Graz, received significant international attention. Their works play with the means of overwhelming, which they also use to bring Jelinek's linguistically powerful text to the stage in a cross-media production. Thus, they transfer Jelinek's linguistic images, in which meanings constantly overlap and shift, into a stage world where music, medial visual worlds, and acting merge into a theater experience that is both visually impressive and enlightening.
