Die Nashörner

They huff and puff, stirring up plenty of dust and then trampling everything down: One by one, the people around the office worker Behringer are transforming into rampaging rhinoceroses. The sighting of the first animal rampaging through the city is dismissed as a rumor, but what seems like an isolated case quickly turns into a mass movement that crushes everything in its path. Those who denied the existence of rhinoceroses yesterday have already become one of them today.

Eugène Ionesco's play is considered a classic of absurd theater and constructs a parable about ideological seduction and the rise of a totalitarian system. The "rhinoceritis" begins insidiously, but then spreads – until resistance seems futile and conformity becomes the supposedly only option. How does one prevent becoming a rhinoceros oneself when everything around starts to stomp?

Director Ulrike Arnold returns to Schauspielhaus Graz for the fourth time and stages another evening of theater full of absurd comedy that attempts to grasp a grotesque reality. With a fine sense of humor, she approaches the characters in Ionesco's play and, together with her successful team, creates a world where the rhinoceros madness becomes palpable and the absurd is equally funny and threatening.
