Der Rosenkavalier
Philipp M. Krenn, director of Sleepless in the 2023/24 season, stages Richard Strauss' and Hugo von Hofmannsthal's melancholic worldwide success, in which the floating waltz melodies are as much historical fiction as the timeless depiction of society filled with arrogance, class snobbery, calculated intrigues, and complex romances. The celebrated Hungarian soprano Polina Pastirchak returns as the Marshal, while former ensemble member Tetiana Miyus returns to the Graz Opera as Sophie. By her side: audience favorite Wilfried Zelinka as Ochs von Lerchenau.
As a light Mozartian comic opera, intended as a cheerful conversational piece, Der Rosenkavalier is full of insights into life and mischief. Strauss’
beloved waltzes are a musical projection of the 18th century, when this dance was still largely unknown. The handing over of the roses
by a young cavalier also comes from the imagination of an author who, after the successful Elektra, took up Richard Strauss’ wish to create a completely new work together. Their correspondence reflects the intense struggles of the sensitive, hypersensitive Hofmannsthal with the down-to-earth Bavarian Strauss, and their often passionately conducted disagreements led to one of the most productive collaborations in the field of music theater.
The very young, newly wealthy Sophie is to marry the coarse Baron Ochs of Lerchenau, a mutually beneficial arrangement: young money for old nobility! The situation goes completely wrong, as the title-giving suitor – simultaneously the youthful lover of an aging marschallin – falls in love with the wooed bride, and vice versa. A work whose relevance lies in the charmingly affectionate portrayal of complex human connections, and in making the perception of time a theme in an era that is sometimes felt as an end time.
