The 15-kilometre-long mountain ridge of the Wechsel, an impressive alpine region in Austria, stretches across the federal states of Lower Austria and Steiermark.

With elevations reaching up to 1,743 metres, the Wechsel offers breathtaking views and a wide range of leisure activities that delight both nature lovers and culture enthusiasts. For hikers, the Wechsel mountains are a true paradise. Well-marked trails lead through dense forests, across lush alpine pastures (Schwaigen), and along idyllic streams. The long-distance trails Alpannonia® and the Historic Wechselland Trail are especially popular, offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountain landscapes. In winter, the region transforms into a snowy wonderland, perfect for cross-country skiing and snowshoe hiking.

Wexl Trails

With the completion of the continuous trail from the Hochwechsel mountain hut across the alpine pastures to the Vorauer Schwaig, the Styrian part of the Wechsel region now offers a 50 km mountain biking network. In total, the trail system across the Wechsel area (in both Steiermark and Lower Austria) covers 130 km, making it the largest mountain biking destination in eastern Austria. All huts are integrated into the network and accessible by bike.
