Panoramic and scenically impressive day hike to the Murauer Hütte.

From Metnitz, you hike via Auen to the border between Carinthia and Styria. Keep left here and follow the path over the Trogscharte ridge uphill to the Frauenalpe. From here, impressive views around the Murau region invite you to linger and enjoy. You then hike downhill to the Murauer Hütte.

By car from Germany
From Munich via the A8 towards Salzburg. From Salzburg on the A10 Tauernautobahn to St. Michael im Lungau. Take the B 96 to Tamsweg, then continue on the B 95 to Stadl an der Mur. Keep right here and drive via Flattnitz and Mödring to Metnitz.

Arrival from Eastern Austria/Hungary
At the highway junction in St. Michael bei Leoben, take the S 36 towards Klagenfurt. Drive past Knittelfeld and Judenburg to Scheifling. In Scheifling continue in the direction of Klagenfurt to Neumarkt, via Unzmarkt and Perchau am Sattel you reach Neumarkt. Continue via Dürnstein and Sankt Salvator to Metnitz.

Arrival from southern Austria/Italy
Via Klagenfurt on the S 37 past St. Veit/Glan, Treibach and Friesach. Keep left in Friesach and drive via Sankt Salvator to Metnitz.

From the parish church in Metnitz, we head west towards the main road, then continue along the sidewalk in the same direction past the sawmill and the village sign until we reach the country road to Murau, which branches off to the right after approx. 30 minutes. We follow this road for approx. 500 meters, then turn right onto a somewhat steeply ascending access road past farms, after approx. 1.5 hours we reach the main road to Murau again.

After 4 km on this road we come to the Carinthia - Styria border. Immediately after the border sign, we turn left uphill to an empty farm from where we reach the Carinthian border hiking trail on a forest path (200 meters in altitude). We follow the border hiking trail uphill to the left for 1.5 hours to the Mürzlhütte. Approx. 250 m after the hut, the goods road ends and we continue in the same direction on a poorly recognizable path, cross a fence and come back to a beautiful forest path to the Kreuzerhütte. Shortly before the hut, we leave the forest path to the left and walk through the forest to the Trogscharte (national border - Trogscharte 7 km, 2 hours).

We follow the signpost to the right to the Murauerhütte. After approx. 1 km we come to a fork near the Troghütte. Climbing to the right, trail no. 109 leads to the Frauenalpe past the Murauer Hütte to the Alpengasthof Krische (4.6 km, 150 m elevation gain, approx. 1.5 hours).
