According to legend, a little man appeared on Christmas night and asked the citizens of Rottenmann to refrain from vicious activities on Christmas night. The little man was laughed at and mocked and disappeared. When he returned, the townspeople again did not stop and insulted him once more.

On his third appearance, the little man had a barrel with him. He opened the barrel and a powerful jet of water shot out of the container. The water rose higher and higher and made the entire town, including the church tower, disappear into it. Anyone passing this spot on Christmas night could hear the church bells of the sunken town of Rottenmann ringing in the depths.
