Murau

The Murau Crafts Museum preserves the cultural history of the city and the district and maintains cultural assets for future generations. Through guided tours that are tailored to the interests of the visitors, the development of craftsmanship and trade is made comprehensible and connected with the stories of people. Thus, tours can last either 2 hours or 30 minutes.

Current information

“veiled. discovered. Objects from the Murau Crafts Museum”

Photo exhibition by Tom Lamm
from July 3 to 31, Monday and Friday 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and by appointment
Opening: Thursday, July 2, 2026, 7:00 p.m.

In addition to the partial redesign of the permanent exhibition, special exhibitions are being conceived. Knowledge, expertise, and techniques are shared with museum visitors of all ages through lectures, workshops, exhibitions, and storytelling cafés. One focus is on DIY activities, while another is the development of new applications for old cultural techniques in collaboration with artists. The thematic beginning will be dedicated to the focus on "textiles," an area that historically held significant economic value and visualized many cultural peculiarities of the city and its surroundings.

History of the Museum
The first attempt to establish a regional museum in Murau was made in 1926 by the then city office director Friedrich Zelburg. From his initiative, only the contents of a showcase remained. The actual implementation succeeded in 1950 when pharmacist Mag. Ernst Gasteiger collected objects from the past from the surrounding area and displayed them in his house. In 1952, he placed his collection under the care of the Joanneum in Graz and donated it to the municipality of Murau a year later. In 1970, the local museum moved to the so-called "Eggharthaus" at Anna-Neumann Street No. 12, where it was reopened in 1971. In 1975, the “City and Craft Museum” moved to the former Capuchin monastery in Murau. Since 1999, the Association for the Promotion of the Murauer Handwerksmuseum has been organizing the preservation, collection, and operation of the museum and establishing the foundation for further developments.
