In order to achieve this, he must help his young, love-struck master Hero win the beautiful courtesan Philia, who has already been sold to an arrogant captain. What follows is a mad chaos of misunderstandings, chases, and absurd masquerades in the streets of ancient Rome. A perfect comedy of errors, inspired by the plays of the Roman comic poet Plautus.
In contrast to his later, more complex works, Sondheim presents here a score that is energetic, catchy, and perfectly suited to the slapstick action. The score is a masterpiece of the "musical comedy" genre, convincing with rhythmic wit, rapid tempos, and pointed lyrics.
