Organ concert in the Leonhardikirche - Murauer Organ Week
The organ of St. Leonhard Church is a historically significant instrument from the 17th century. Accordingly, the program includes organ solo literature and alternatim music (alternating singing and organ playing) from the German-speaking area of the 16th to 18th centuries. Thematically, it provides a musical arc that will also be expanded by solo songs from the Middle Ages. Following the concert, there will be an opportunity to tour the historical organ.
Manfred Novak (*1977) studied organ and church music in Vienna and organ in Amsterdam, where he focused on music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Scientific lectures as well as solo and chamber music concerts have taken him to various countries and to historical organs in Europe (Alkmaar, Grote Sint Laurenskerk; Amsterdam, Nieuwe Kerk; Rötha, St. Georgenkirche; Kongsberg; Vilnius, Church Heritage Museum; Dresden, Cathedral, etc.) and even to Canada, Australia, and Brazil. From 2010 to 2021, he worked as an organist and choir director at the Benedictine Monastery of St. Lambrecht. Several CD publications testify to his artistic work. He leads a multinational ensemble for early music and is a doctoral candidate at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz. In spring 2022, he took on an interim position as monastery organist at the Augustinian Canons Monastery Klosterneuburg, and since September 2022, he has been the church music advisor of the Diocese of Innsbruck.
The Murau Organ Week 2026
This year, the Murau Organ Week will once again welcome you with a diverse program. The range spans from the Middle Ages to the present, from the portative organ to the modern organ. You can look forward to an organ tour with an encounter to kick off the week, an organ mass, four concerts, and the opportunity to view the oldest organ in Murau, all offerings that provide exclusive insights into the fascinating organ landscape of the city and the district of Murau. This year, singing will also complement and enrich the organ sound in three concerts, and in the closing concert of the week, the trumpet will join the organ as a partner in the chamber music concert.
Manfred Novak, artistic director of the Murau Organ Week, is pleased to welcome you to captivating sound experiences in the special atmosphere of historical venues!
