On a bold boardwalk construction, visitors "float" at a comfortable height above a pristine example of the intact riparian landscape along the Enns River. All stations operate from May to October, and depending on weather and snow conditions, the path is accessible year-round.
Right next to the Willow Dome—the largest tree-based structure in Austria—the Lettmair Au meanders through the floodplain landscape along the banks of the Enns. This themed trail takes us on a journey through various interactive stations into the fascinating world of riverine floodplains. It’s an ideal place for sensory exploration and a constructive approach to acquiring knowledge.

The roughly 30-minute expedition into the floodplain universe near the Enns can easily stretch into several hours in summer—especially if you enjoy recreating river courses at the play stations or have an interest in the topic of “natural flowing waters.” At the diverse experience stations, we learn through play and explore questions about the river habitat.

The Lettmair Au themed trail is 1.5 kilometers long and a top tip for anyone looking to briefly escape. Not into the Enns itself, but away from the hustle and bustle in your head and daily life. Thoughts begin to flow freely—faster than you might expect. By the time you reach the viewing platform, the mental highway has shut down, and you’re simply gazing at nature, marveling at the view.

The wooden boardwalk section of the Lettmair Au is wheelchair accessible, and strollers glide along with ease. Located in the heart of the Gesäuse National Park, this themed trail offers rich insights into ecological connections and delivers plenty of “aha” moments—especially if your understanding of floodplain forests has been a bit off track.

The national park offers guided programmes at the willow dome: Microscopy of a water drop, determination of the creatures using boards, finally the water drop is projected onto a screen and tiny water fleas and mayfly larvae become monsters moving on the screen.
