First pedal, then lace up your hiking boots: Bike & Hike in Hochsteiermark combines cycling and hiking for a unique mountain experience in Austria. By mountain bike, e-MTB or gravel bike, the routes take you through scenic valleys and forests and up to alpine pastures – before continuing on foot towards the summit.

Ten selected Bike & Hike tours, ranging from 73 to 75 kilometres, lead through the diverse mountain landscape of Hochsteiermark – from the striking limestone peaks of the Hochschwab, Schneealpe and Hohe Veitsch to the Fischbach Alps. The best of both worlds

Bike & Hike combines two outdoor activities into one unique mountain adventure in Hochsteiermark: The first part of the tour is covered by mountain bike or e-bike. At a designated transition point, you leave your bike behind and continue on foot – to an alpine pasture, a scenic viewpoint or all the way to the summit.

This opens up a whole new range of possibilities. By bike, you can comfortably cover longer distances, while hiking takes you to special places beyond the reach of cycling routes.

And after the hike? Often the best part awaits: a relaxed ride back down into the valley.

An easy way to reach the trailhead

Hop on the train, arrive and start cycling: All ten Bike & Hike tours start directly at railway stations, making it easy and convenient to travel by public transport.

Along the Mürz Valley, train services connect many of the tour starting points. Hochsteiermark is also easily accessible by public transport from Vienna and Graz.

This means your Bike & Hike adventure can begin right at the station – without having to search for a parking space and with the flexibility to combine individual tours with train connections.

There are ten selected Bike & Hike tours in Hochsteiermark. They lead to destinations including the Schneealm, Hohe Veitsch, Aflenzer Bürgeralm and Schießlingalm, as well as through the mountain landscape of the Hochschwab, Rosegger’s Waldheimat and the Mariazellerland.
Bike & Hike is ideal for active cyclists, hiking enthusiasts and anyone who wants to experience nature in a variety of ways.
 

Not necessarily. Due to the longer distances and elevation gains on some routes, an e-mountain bike is recommended for many tours. Some routes can also be completed by gravel bike or mountain bike.

Yes. The starting points of all ten tours were deliberately chosen close to railway stations. The S1 train connects numerous starting points along the Mürz Valley and runs hourly between Bruck an der Mur and Mürzzuschlag. This makes it easy to reach the tours by public transport, including from Vienna and Graz.

The main season runs from May to October, when alpine paths and hiking trails are generally free of snow. For high-alpine tours, June to September is recommended. Route accessibility may vary, so always check the latest information for your chosen route before setting off.
