Variant for the ascent to the Bürgeralpe - via the Stehralm comfortably on forest road and forest paths to the summit.

Hike to the Bürgeralpe with a wonderful view of Mariazell from the Stehralm - up to the Stehralm always slightly ascending, then on forest roads comfortably and the last part again on forest paths ascending to the summit.

via the Westautobahn (A1 from Salzburg or Vienna) to the exit Ybbs or St. Pölten/Süd, then B 20 to Mariazeller Landfrom the south to Bruck/Mur - Kapfenberg, then B 20 over the Seebergpass into Mariazeller Land

Parking lots

We start at the main square Mariazell and turn right into Wiener Neustädter Straße. Pass the office of the tourist association and at the One-World-Shop (closed) turn into Schießstattgasse.

At the next junction keep right - direction Viktor Lang Gasse - from now on the path is signposted 693. After about 30 minutes we pass the Stehralm (no longer managed!) and enjoy the magnificent view of Mariazell.Follow the forest paths to the Hohlenstein junction and turn left here, following the signposts to "Bürgeralpe/Edelweißhütte".

Always uphill we reach the foot of the crystal lake, here turn right and at the end of the lake left towards Edelweißhütte.

If you are still fit enough, visit the Erzherzog Johann Warte and you will be rewarded with a wonderful view of the surrounding mountains.

Continue to the mountain inn and take the new Bürgeralpe-Express back to Mariazell - or walk back to Mariazell on trail 694.

Sturdy shoes are recommended.

Proper backpacking makes many things easier: pack heavy things first. The water bottle should always be within easy reach in a side pocket. All things that are often needed such as sunglasses, camera or hiking map belong on top. An emergency kit including blister plaster belongs in every backpack and a clothing according to the "onion system" is always recommended!
