From Mariazell to the Dürrieglalm by bike and on foot to the Tonion

From Mariazell, this bike & hike tour leads along quiet forest roads and alpine trails into the mountain landscape of the Mürzsteger Alps. Passing open alpine meadows and historic pilgrimage sites, the route continues to Tonion, one of the region's best-known peaks.

Starting at the Basilica of Mariazell, this bike & hike tour leads into the alpine pastures and karst landscapes of the Mürzsteger Alps. Following signposted cycle routes along the Salza River and Falbersbach, the route passes through peaceful forests and scenic alpine meadows to Dürrieglalm.

From there, the hiking section continues across Herrenboden to the summit of Tonion (1,699 m), one of the best-known panoramic peaks between Schneealpe, Veitsch and Hochschwab. Along the way, visitors can enjoy an impressive diversity of alpine flora and the distinctive karst landscape. A particular highlight is the Madonna am Herrenboden, created by the renowned Austrian architect Günther Domenig, which forms a striking landmark in the open alpine scenery.

Conclusion: Although the route follows the same path on the return journey, every pedal stroke and every step reveals the landscape from a new perspective.
