BergZeitReise Day Hike No. 14: Along the Jakobsweg near Turnau

Although the Bründlweg is one of the most well-known and popular leisurely hiking trails in Styria, not far from it lies an alternative for those seeking more peace and less hustle and bustle: the Jakobsweg in Turnau.

You begin the circular hike directly in the town center of Turnau (large information board, department store, bakery, and tourist information). From there, head briefly south along the main road (sidewalk) toward Pogusch until you reach the clearly visible fire station. From here, the trail veers left, passing by the valley station of the Schwabenbergarena ski lift, and continues in a northeastern direction toward the Stübming district. Follow the well-marked path, cross the Maurergraben stream, and reach the intersection with the main road that leads to Pretalsattel. This section takes about 1.5 hours.

Throughout the hike, you’ll enjoy lovely views of the Turnau parish church, dedicated to Saint James, which gives the trail its name.

On the opposite side of the road, continue your return journey, passing two farmhouses and even crossing through a yard, up to the highest point of the entire trail at 933 meters above sea level. Near the Tanschen farm, there’s a good place for a rest, before crossing the Greithstraße road and arriving at an old chapel near the beautiful Fladischerhof farm. From the chapel, a somewhat overgrown path leads to the mountain station of the small Eichfeld ski lift, where the occasionally open Eichfeldlift hut invites you for a break.

By now, you’ll already have a glimpse of the end of the circular hike, the Jakobuskirche (St. James Church). It’s quickly reached, and a final rest in Turnau awaits.

Sporty footwear is recommended for this circular hike.

General tips: Properly packing your backpack makes everything much easier:

Pack heavier items first. The water bottle (ideal: 1 liter or more) should always be easily accessible. Items that are frequently needed, such as sunglasses, camera, phone, or hiking map, should be placed on top.

An emergency kit, including blister plasters, belongs in every backpack, and dressing in layers (the "onion system") is always recommended! Never forget your rain gear!

To start your day, we recommend a breakfast at the traditional Seidl bakery and pastry shop, located directly at the main square.
