Either way, all mountaineers have the chance to climb the seven most prominent peaks of the Mürzer Oberland Nature Park in Styria along this scenic route.

Heukuppe / Rax, Windberg / Schneealm, Spielkogel / Hinteralm, Königskogel and Wildalpe / Mürzsteg Alps, Großer Wildkamm / Veitsch, and Große Scheibe.

You can start the tour wherever you like – in Neuberg an der Mürz, Frein an der Mürz, at the Preiner Gscheid, or at the Niederalpl.

You can choose your starting point – and parking – freely, depending on your preference:
Neuberg an der Mürz, Frein an der Mürz, Preiner Gscheid, or Niederalpl are all possible starting locations.

Most hikes and mountain tours in the Mürzer Oberland Nature Park lead through alpine terrain. Especially on longer routes, good physical fitness, surefootedness, and a head for heights are strongly recommended.

On the high plateaus of the Rax, Schneealm, and Veitsch, orientation can become difficult in fog or bad weather. In winter, always be aware of avalanche danger!

Packing your backpack properly makes everything easier:
Pack heavy items first. Your water bottle (ideally 1 liter or more) should always be within easy reach. Frequently used items like sunglasses, camera, phone, or hiking map belong on top.

An emergency kit – including blister plasters – should be part of every backpack. Dressing in layers (“onion principle”) is always recommended! For alpine hikes, don’t forget proper rain protection.

Take your time and spend a full week hiking – and enjoying the culinary and cultural highlights along the route through the Mürzer Oberland Nature Park. Discover regional delights such as the award-winning Schäffer gourmet restaurant, the impressive Neuberg Abbey, or the fascinating Lumberjack and Mining Museums in Mürzsteg and Altenberg an der Rax.

The Upper Mürz Valley is home to a variety of remarkable sights, including the Neuberg Abbey, the traditional glassblowing workshop at the Kaiserhof, and the Neuberg Nature Museum with the unique Schliefsteiner Collection. Also worth a visit are the world’s largest spinning wheel in Kapellen, the new Climate Change Trail in Altenberg / Rax, the scenic Totes Weib waterfall near Mürzsteg / Frein, and the show mine tunnel on the banks of the Mürz River in Krampen.
