From Mürzzuschlag to the Schneealpe by Bike and on Foot to Windberg

From the floor of the Mürztal Valley to one of Styria's most beautiful alpine plateaus, this bike & hike tour combines a challenging climb by bike with an easy hike through the fascinating karst landscape of the Schneealpe, also known as Schneealm. Vast alpine meadows, striking sinkholes and Windberg, the highest point of the plateau, make this tour a truly special experience.

Starting in Mürzzuschlag, this bike & hike tour begins with a relaxed ride along the Mürztal Cycle Route before the climb to the Schneealpe (also known as Schneealm) begins. The route combines scenic valley sections with a more demanding gravel ascent to a beautiful alpine plateau, where traditional alpine farming coexists harmoniously with cycling and hiking.

At the top, a vast high plateau unfolds, dotted with only a few scattered mountain huts. The selected circular hike showcases the unique character of this limestone massif, leading across expansive alpine meadows, past striking sinkholes (dolines), mountain pine fields and flower-filled pastures.

The destination of the tour is Windberg (1,903 m), the highest point of the Schneealpe. After the hike, the scenic descent along the toll road back into the Mürztal Valley, followed by a relaxed ride back to Mürzzuschlag, provides the perfect finish to this unforgettable day.
