Mariazell

The village owes its origin to St. Sebastian, the church of St. Sebastian standing on the Via Sacra since the 17th century.

St. Sebastian's Church was designed by the master builder of the Mariazell Basilica - Domenico Sciassia - and built from 1644. The central building on a cruciform ground plan is the last stop for pilgrims on the "via sacra" from Vienna to Mariazell.

The martyrdom of the church patron is impressively depicted on the column in front of the high altar. Parts of the high altar were created by Michael Hönel in 1643 and were originally intended for an altar in the basilica. Around 1730 the altar was changed and placed in St. Sebastian. The altarpiece "Assumption of Mary" is by Fridericus Stilpp, above it are the coronation of Mary and statues of St. John the Evangelist and St. John the Baptist. To the side are sculptures of St. Lambert as patron of St. Lambrecht Abbey and St. Benedict.
