From the centre of Admont, turn right towards Weng im Gesäuse. Here you have a choice: you can cycle through the scenic Gesäuse National Park with opportunities for excursions in Johnsbach or Eisenerz. Please note: there is only a separate cycle path in some sections here, and heavy traffic is to be expected on most of this section, which runs along the road! We therefore advise against this section, especially if you are travelling with children. Or we can take one of the alternatives:
- An alternative is the unmarked route via the Buchauer Sattel pass, which takes you directly to St. Gallen. However, this route involves several long climbs before you reach your destination. It is therefore only recommended for very fit cyclists – or those travelling by e-bike with sufficient battery power.
Another increasingly popular option for avoiding traffic between Admont and Weyer is the bike shuttle service provided by Taxi Thalhuber Landl, tel. +43 3637 212, and Taxi Wagner Admont, tel. +43 3613 2406. Please book the bike shuttle in advance!
In addition, between Altenmarkt bei St. Gallen and Großraming, the R9 Hintergebirgsradweg cycle path via the Weißwasser bivouac site to Reichraming is a wonderful alternative to the cycle route along the Enns. The Hintergebirgsradweg cycle path leads, among other places, along the former route of the old forest railway and through old rock tunnels along a crystal-clear mountain stream. Please note: The Hintergebirgsradweg R9 (Reichraminger Hintergebirge/Waldbahnstraße) is closed from the Annerlsteg (Triftsteig entrance) until further notice due to a rockfall.
The main route continues from Weng to the entrance to the Gesäuse, an impressive natural site. From here, we unfortunately have to cycle on the road – alternatives can be found as mentioned above. The journey through this romantic yet wild landscape of the national park takes us to the Weidendom National Park Centre in Gstatterboden. We then continue on the road to Hieflau, where there is the option of taking trips to Johnsbach to visit the famous mountaineers' cemetery or to Eisenerz to see the Erzberg. Staying on the main route, we pass Mooslandl and arrive at Großreifling, where we keep left to cross the Erbsattel pass, past the Hotel Schloss Kassegg and into the idyllic village of St. Gallen. Here there are numerous places to stop for refreshments, such as the Heurigenstube Angerer or the Gasthof Hensle, which specialises in cyclists and mountain bikers. The route continues at a leisurely pace, occasionally on the road, through the beautiful landscape of the Reichraminger Hintergebirge mountains to Weyer with its Enns Museum, which is located directly on the Enns Cycle Path
