Arrival by train
Environmentally friendly travel to the Gesäuse
On weekends and public holidays, trains run twice a day from Vienna via the Westbahn railway line directly to Gesäuse and back again. On Fridays, express trains run all year round from Vienna to Liezen (terminus Bischofshofen) and on Sundays back to Vienna (bicycles can be taken on board with prior reservation).
Otherwise, there are several connections daily from all directions to/from Liezen. From there, you can take the Regio bus directly to your accommodation.
Arrival by car
The journey by car to the Gesäuse region in Styria is independent and flexible. Whether you are coming from the north, south, west or east, travelling to the green heart of Austria by car is easy. To avoid waiting times and traffic jams, it is advisable to check the current traffic situation before setting off.
Please note: On Austrian motorways and expressways, a vignette must be displayed on the windscreen of your car. This is also available in digital form. The adhesive vignette can be obtained from automobile clubs, petrol stations and stations at border crossings. A 10-day vignette is suitable for short breaks. If you are visiting Styria and Austria for longer or more often, the 2-month or annual vignette is worthwhile.
In addition to the vignette requirement, there are some special toll roads in Austria, such as the Bosruck and Gleinalm tunnels. This special toll is paid directly on site or by purchasing a video toll card in advance.
