A challenging and scenic mountain bike loop from Leoben-Göss to the Mugel. The route climbs up to Leoben’s local mountain via the Kleiner Gössgraben and then returns to Leoben via Niklasdorf and the Murradweg R2. Breathtaking views and cozy places to stop for a break make the long climb worthwhile.
The Mugelrunde I 818 is one of the most varied mountain bike tours around Leoben. The starting point for this mountain bike loop is Leoben’s main square. From here, the route first leads through the town toward Göss. From there, the tour follows Kaltenbrunnerstraße, first passing the Maria Kaltenbrunn pilgrimage chapel and then continuing into the Kleiner Gössgraben. After the first few kilometers on asphalt, the route runs mostly along easily rideable forest and gravel roads. The trail climbs steadily through the shady forest. On the way toward Mugel, you’ll pass the Stadlmaier-Alm, which is a great spot for a break. Further along, there are some steeper climbs. Shortly before the summit, the route flattens out again and repeatedly offers impressive views of the surrounding mountains. Once you reach the Mugel at 1,626 meters, the Mugelschutzhaus invites you to take a well-deserved break. The tour then leads downhill toward Niklasdorf. From there, the route follows the Murradweg R2 back to Leoben and finally returns to the starting point.

The starting point of the mountain bike loop is Leoben’s main square. From here, the route first leads through the town toward Göss. At the roundabout in Göss, it continues along Kaltenbrunnerstraße toward Kleiner Gössgraben. From this point on, follow the existing LE01 signage. The route initially runs on asphalt past the Maria Kaltenbrunn pilgrimage chapel and continues into Kleiner Gössgraben. Gradually, the paved road transitions into a well-maintained forest and gravel road. Now follow the route continuously uphill through the forest. Along the way, you’ll pass the Stadlmaier-Alm. The rest of the ascent becomes significantly steeper in some sections and requires good physical conditioning. The closer you get to the Mugel, the more the landscape opens up. The final meters to the summit are somewhat flatter again and offer beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. At the highest point of the tour, you reach the Mugel with the Mugelschutzhaus at approximately 1,626 meters above sea level. After a rest, the descent toward Niklasdorf begins. Following the existing LE01 signage, you ride downhill to Niklasdorf. From there, the route switches to the Mur Cycle Path R2 and leads along the Mur River back to Leoben. Passing through the town, you eventually return to Leoben’s main square.
A mountain bike or e-mountain bike in perfect working order, as well as a bicycle helmet, are part of the basic equipment.
We also recommend bringing plenty of drinks and snacks, weather-appropriate clothing, rain and wind protection, a first-aid kit, and a fully charged cell phone. A basic set of tools and accessories—such as a spare inner tube and/or repair kit, wrenches, a pump, brake and shifter cables, and a screwdriver—can never hurt.
Before the ride, be sure to check tire pressure, brakes, brake pads, the derailleur, and spoke tension. If using an e-mountain bike, make sure the battery has sufficient capacity given the distance and elevation gain.
Emergency Call for Cycling Accidents: 144
When reporting an emergency, provide answers to the six “W” questions if possible:
What happened? How many people are injured?
Where did the accident occur? If possible, provide GPS coordinates.
Who is reporting the accident? Provide a callback number.
When did the accident occur?
What are the weather conditions at the scene of the accident?

On the way to Gössgraben you will pass the Maria Kaltenbrunn chapel. The small pilgrimage chapel is hidden and romantic in the Gössgraben. It was built at the beginning of the last century and is still visited by many people as a magical place of power for a quiet devotion or simply to recharge their batteries.
