Marian column in burgau

On the main square stands the Marian column, marked 1750, on a square base, featuring a gilded statue of Mary from the workshop of Veit Königer.

The Marian column is made of sandstone, is approximately 11 m high, and is crowned by a magnificent Baroque capitol with the gilded statue of Mary on top. The year inscribed on the column commemorates the terrible storm and hailstorm in July 1778, which not only completely destroyed all crops but also damaged almost all buildings to varying degrees.

During this storm, the Marian column was also toppled and shattered. Additionally, the northern tower of the castle was a victim of the storm. Since that time, a supplication procession has been held every 2nd Sunday in July (Donati). As part of the rejuvenation of the Burgau local landscape, a stone fountain was designed on the main square as another noteworthy work of art.
