Historic spa town of Bad Gleichenberg

In 1834, the governor of Styria, Count Mathias Constantin von Wickenburg, founded the resort of Bad Gleichenberg. He developed the local healing springs and systematically laid out the town. Bad Gleichenberg quickly became one of the most sought-after and respected resorts of the monarchy. Members of European royal houses, international nobility, the upper bourgeoisie, and important military figures populated the place during the "season," which lasted from May to September.

Even today, Bad Gleichenberg is full of traces of this great past. The Curmuseum Association works to keep this history alive and accessible to the public. At several stations of the attractively designed "Historical Walk," one can embark on an exciting journey through the fascinating history of Bad Gleichenberg.

Even Peter Rosegger succumbed to the special charms of Bad Gleichenberg when he penned this declaration of love in 1906. The fascination of a landscape that uniquely combines history and tradition with an enchanting region has remained. It is a harmony that has grown over 180 years. While strolling in the spa park, one can let their soul unwind—passing by old villas and the giant trees that invitingly spread their branches. In summer, they provide soothing shade. The picturesque resort in the thermal and volcanic region owes its fame to the healing springs known to the Romans. The spa resort Bad Gleichenberg, with its existence since 1834, is the oldest in Styria and is located in a former volcanic area at an elevation of 300 m above sea level.

A place full of relaxation

Since 2015, Bad Gleichenberg has a newly designed main square. As a place of encounter and enjoyable lingering, it represents a successful interplay between revitalized and restored historical buildings and new architecture, merging with fountains into a harmonious ensemble.

The highly developed health competence is also of great importance in Bad Gleichenberg. Respiratory complaints and skin diseases, in particular, can be very effectively treated through special applications, such as the Gleichenberger brine, in the spa house Bad Gleichenberg.
