Schöckl is one of the most popular hiking destinations near Graz and offers a classic summit experience. This loop hike combines the busy summit area with quieter sections on the northern side and leads to a scenic summit cross in the Semriach area.

The Schöckl Plateau south of Semriach is one of the main hiking and recreation areas near Graz and is often busy, especially around the summit on fine days.

This loop hike starts at Gasthaus Jägerwirt in Semriach and heads southeast across the plateau, using quieter sections away from the main routes. On the western side, the summit cross at 1442 m is a prominent viewpoint, built in 1961 in honour of Archduke Johann, with wide views over Semriach, the Almenland and the northern Limestone Alps.

A short detour to the Niedere Schöckl, a clearing with a small summit cross, adds a quieter viewpoint overlooking Graz.

Gasthof Jägerwirt – parking available nearby; alternative spaces about 900 m away at the former valley station of the disused chairlift.

From Gasthof Jägerwirt (958 m), follow the asphalt road towards Schöckl to the former valley station of the disused chairlift, where an alternative parking option is available. Turn left and walk uphill along the former lift line, keeping left at the first junction. The route continues on a level forest road with open views. At the next junctions, keep right or uphill and follow the yellow signs towards Schöckl Bergstation.

The ascent leads via the east summit and the Johannes Chapel to the gondola top station, then continues across the plateau to the summit cross on the west summit (1442 m).

For the descent, follow the fence towards the saddle, with an optional detour to Niederer Schöckl (1340 m). From there, descend on a wide path through the forest to the asphalt road, turn right and return to the former valley station and back to Gasthof Jägerwirt.
