Wonderful snowshoe hike through the glittering forests of the Fischbach Alps.

Known in summer as the moss and fern trail, we hike here with snowshoes on mossy ground and along snow-covered ferns and herbs.

From Vienna via the A2 Südautobahn highway and the S6 Semmering expressway to the Kindberg exit. Here through the Stanzertal valley on the Schanzsattel-Landesstraße L114 to Fischbach.

From Graz via the Weizer-Bundesstraße B72 to Birkfeld and from here via the Schanzsattel-Landesstraße L114 to Fischbach.

From Linz/Salzburg/Munich via the Pyhrnautobahn A9 and the Semmering-Schnellstraße S6 to the Kindberg exit. Continue as above.

Fischbach, village square (free)

We start (here still without snowshoes) at the village square in Fischbach and walk first towards the church, past the school and on towards Birkfeld until we turn right towards Elmleiten
There, trail no. 13 - the so-called Moosweg - branches off. Here we change to snowshoes and take a pleasant walk on mossy ground until we reach trail no. 14 - the fern path
We hike back along this trail in a snow-covered forest
Then we take the country road back to the starting point in Fischbach.

A few tips on correct and fair behaviour in the forest: (Source: www.bundesforste.at )

Hikers should avoid visits to the forest about 1.5 hours before sunrise and after sunset, as wild animals are particularly active during this time.
Plastic bottles, handkerchiefs, cigarette butts etc. have no place in the forest! Please make sure that you do not leave any rubbish in the forest.
Camping and lighting fires are strictly forbidden in the forest!

Route description
Before starting the hike, check where you can stop for refreshments, including opening times, or pack suitable food.

This hike can also be done in reverse (first No. 14 and then No. 13).
