Discover the 10 km circular hiking trail around Kaindorf, dotted with field and small monuments (Materl), which serve as religious companions along the way.

Experience an approx. three-hour circular hike from Kaindorf via Altenberg to St. Stefan and back to Kaindorf, which will immerse you in the rich history of the region. There are numerous "Materl", small memorials, along the way. Some were erected to mark the fulfillment of vows, to commemorate family events or tragic events such as wars and plague epidemics. Others mark the sites of accidents or crimes, commemorate the deceased or invite people to pray. These small monuments often bear the names of their builders or caring families, and some are named after the surrounding landscape. They are fascinating witnesses to an eventful history and adorn the beautiful landscape of Hartbergerland in Eastern Styria.

Navigation to Kaindorf Ort

Kaindorf Ort or Kopfing bei Kaindorf Abzw Ort (Banklwirt)

From the parish church in Kaindorf we cross the B 54 and follow the signs "Materlweg" uphill to Kopfing.
In Kopfing we continue along the Hochstraße to the Steiner Kreuz cross.
From the Steirer Kreuz we follow the Materlweg via the Hirt Chapel and the Zettl Kreuz and cross the Kaindorf Winzendorf road to St. StefanApprox.
500 meters from St. Stefan, along path no. 13, is the Reichl or Brunn Chapel.
From St. Stefan in Pöllauer Safental we follow the signs to the Felberfbauer cross, the Riegelhöf chapel and the Seegassl cross via the cemetery to Kaindorf church.

A few tips on correct and fair behavior in the forest: (Source: www.bundesforste.at )

Hikers should avoid visiting the forest approx. 1.5 hours before sunrise and after sunset, as wild animals are particularly active at this time.
Plastic bottles, handkerchiefs, cigarette butts etc. have no place in the forest!
Please make sure that you do not leave any garbage in the forest.
Camping and making fires is strictly forbidden in the forest!
In principle, every person in the forest is allowed to collect 2 kg of mushrooms and berries per day for their own use. It is only prohibited if the forest owner expressly forbids it.

Route description

Before starting the hike, check where you can stop for refreshments, including opening times, or pack suitable food and drink.

Enjoy the culinary delights in Kaindorf and the surrounding area and take a look at the Steiner Kreuz on the Hochstrasse, the church of St. Stefan and the Frauenhöhle at the Buchberger farm in St. Stefan. (Visits possible on request)
