This HWW hiking route is part of the Wechselland Historical Long-Distance Hiking Trail (HWW), which tells the story of Wechselland along more than 100 HWW stations. More information can be found at www.wechsel-wandern.at.

This extensive HWW hiking route from St. Ilgen, the lowest point in Wechselland, to the highest mountain in Wechselland. From St. Ilgen you have a beautiful view of the Hochwechsel. Along the HWW hiking route, you pass the Koglerauerhof HWW station, where you can learn that a medieval fortification once stood above the Koglerauerhof.

Arrival by car

Drive along the A2 highway to the Pinkafeld exit.
Then follow the signs to Grafenschachen.
Continue to Neustift an der Lafnitz and Lafnitz.
After the municipal office, turn left towards St. Ilgen.

The tour is not signposted throughout. Route guidance with app recommended.

Starting point: St. Ilgen.
Follow the path through Lafnitz and Rohrbach in the direction of Jausenstation Uhl.
Continue along the hiking trail to St. Lorenzen/Wechsel.
From St. Lorenzen/Wechsel, the trail leads via the Glatzl Trahütten Alm to the Hochwechsel.
Destination: Hochwechsel, where the hike ends and a magnificent view of the surrounding area awaits.

Hikers should avoid visiting the forest approx. 1.5 hours before sunrise and after sunset, as wild animals are particularly active at this time.
Plastic bottles, handkerchiefs, cigarette butts etc. have no place in the forest! Please make sure that you do not leave any rubbish in the forest.
Camping and making fires is strictly forbidden in the forest!
In principle, every person in the forest is allowed to collect 2kg of mushrooms and berries per day for their own use. It is only prohibited if the forest owner expressly forbids it.

Route description
Before starting the hike, check where you can stop for refreshments, including opening times, or pack suitable provisions.

We recommend stopping off at the Glatzl Trahütten Alm or the Vorauer Schwaig and enjoying the view.
