“Lost Places” Tour in Anger (Austria, hiking tour)
General Information
Go on a guided historical hike in Anger to get a glimpse into the region that mainstream tourists just can’t get. Take a peek into the past at the “mystical” museum, get a taste of the local cuisine at the “Rauchstubenhaus”, and enjoy the phenomenal panoramic views from the Waxenegg castle ruins.
Details of the “Lost Places” tour in Anger:
The circular route starts and ends at the main square in Anger. The route is about 6 km long and includes a difference in altitude of 400 m. The whole hike, including the various stops at local sights, takes about 5–6 hours. The route consists nearly entirely of hiking trails.
- Our starting point is the “Steinpaißhaus”, Anger’s oldest building (1351), located on the main square. Some time ago, an underground passage leading from the “Steinpaißhaus” to the Waxenegg castle ruins was discovered. The tunnel isn’t accessible just yet, so instead, we’ll take the hiking route overground.
- Before we start, you’ll have a chance to visit the museum called “Mysthische Unter- und Oberwelten der Region Anger”, which gives interesting insights into Anger’s “underworld” and where you can see one end of the underground passage.
Then the hike starts in earnest, leading us to the following pit stops:
- Welcome drink and great views over Anger at the „Musibankerl“: The Musibankerl is connected to a more than 100-year old tradition. Every Easter Sunday, Anger’s marching band performs the wake-up call here at 4 am, accompanied by the church bells.
- The route continues towards the Waxenegg castle ruins, which first come dramatically into view through a “natural window” along the route.
- We walk along the "Bergerlweg" in the picturesque "Bürgerwald" forest.
- The hiking route then leads us to the “Rauchstubenhaus” in Edelschachen. This inn and smokehouse was first mentioned in a document in 1450. Today, it also comprises a local heritage museum. You will get to experience the traditional “Häfennigl” dessert, prepared over an open fire by the head chef himself.
- After a short ascent, we finally reach the mystical setting of the Waxenegg castle ruins. The highlight of the tour is the newly revitalized castle cellar, where the Waxenegg project and the history of the underworld are brought closer to the guests with the help of a film documentation.
- Along the Zetzbach tributary, we get to the Floriani waterfall, walking through an almost jungle-like landscape.
- After a short rest, we head back to Anger along the picturesque “Bürgerwald” forest.
