Weberhaus

Kurt Weber, the painter, was born in the stately merchant house in 1893. His widow sold the house in 1990 to the municipality of Weiz, which converted it into a cultural center.

The Medusa's Head has remained as the logo of the cultural center. The Medusa's Head on the gates of the portal has already guarded the building at Weizer Südtirolerplatz when it was still in family ownership. Originally, the Medusa, the fearsome being of Greek mythology with snake hair, was meant to deter evil intruders and uninvited guests.

On May 26, 1990, the Weberhaus cultural center was officially opened with an exhibition of Kurt Weber's works. Since then, numerous artists from home and abroad have exhibited, played music, read, and presented their works at the Weberhaus.

To this day, the Weberhaus considers itself a place of encounter between culture, artists, and visitors. Directly from the Südtirolerplatz, one enters the green, winding courtyard, which offers space for theater performances, small concerts, and events during the summer months, while also serving as an oasis of calm.

In the jazz cellar, a diverse program ensures cultural variety. It is not only used for concerts but also provides a stage for theater performances, cabaret, and readings.

On the first floor of the Weberhaus, there is a large gallery that provides space for paintings, photographs, and various art objects. Regular exhibitions, as well as smaller concerts, readings, and numerous other cultural events, take place here.

Also on the upper floor, a bright and friendly library and the ludothèque invite you to linger, discover, and experience. The library and ludothèque now extend to the second floor of the Weberhaus.
