The "Toter Mann" is actually a crossroads with a chapel and bench in the middle of the forest.
In the direction of Wildwiese, you will pass the striking "Toter Mann" (Dead Man), a chapel at a crossroads between Wenigzell, Strallegg, Vorau, Ratten and Miesenbach. According to legend, a penitent who was on a pilgrimage to Mariazell with his wife died here. The farmers later built a chapel over his grave. His wife continued her pilgrimage to Mariazell and later died in the Mürztal near Frein, giving the area the name "Totes Weib" (Dead Female).
In reality, the "Toter Mann" is a broad, easily accessible hilltop where many roads meet. The name "Toter Mann" comes from the Celtic (TOTA = people/tribe, MAGOS = field).
