Thonet Museum

The famous bentwood furniture is presented in a unique show at the place of production. And of course "No. 14", the first industrially manufactured armchair, which gained international recognition as a "coffee house chair" with the emerging Viennese café culture.

The history of the Thonet company begins in 1819 with the founding of Michael Thonetin Boppard's joinery on the Rhine. In 1842, the carpenter was brought to Vienna by the Austrian Chancellor, Prince Metternich, and in 1851, on the occasion of the London World Exhibition, he experienced a worldwide boom in success. Generations later, Michael Thonet's great-grandson, Dr. Fritz-Jacob Thonet set up a small workshop in Vienna and with the support of the then Styrian governor Krainer, the production of the furniture was also relocated to Styria, which, however, came to an end in 2006.

Unique pieces as far as the eye can see! The Thonetmuseum in Friedberg in the Wechselland region is the only museum that deals with the works of the well-known carpenter. In the exhibition you will find over 80 exhibits that can only be viewed here, including the world exhibition table by Thonet from 1851 or the only Liechtenstein chair, as well as the legendary Postal Savings Bank chair by Otto Wagner and shapely pieces by the Vienna Secessionists - this is where art lovers come into their own your costs. The museum opened in 1994. The entrance area on the ground floor of the special collection of seating furniture is dedicated to company founder Michael Thonet (1796-1874) and shows his work from the transition from handicraft to industrial mass production in the 19th century. More chairs can be seen on the upper floor of the museum. The museum displays more than 80 exhibits very clearly and presents an important piece of Austrian aesthetic history.

GenussCard guests who are in possession of the GenussCard have free admission and guided tours to the exhibition.

The Wechselland library is on the ground floor and the Thonet exhibition is on the upper floor.
