Parish Church Wenigzell

The parish church of Wenigzell is a popular pilgrimage site for pilgrims who are on their way to Mariazell. It is dedicated to the St. Margaret and the feast day of Margaret (July 20) is celebrated every year with a musicians' fair.

In a document at the Stift Vorau, the village "Zell" with the chapel of St. Margaret is first mentioned in 1209. In the second half of the 17th century, Wenigzell was a popular pilgrimage site for farmers who prayed to Saint Patricius for luck in the stable. Following this, the expansion of the church began, which was consecrated in 1735. It was a magnificent Rococo church, which, however, became a victim of flames during the turmoil of war on April 19, 1945.

Gradually, the reconstruction and design in the style of neo-Baroque began. The only artistically modern piece is a baptismal font made of serpentinite, with the basin shaped like an octahedron, designed by the Graz artist Wolfgang Rahs.
