Barbara Sicharter (1829 - 1905) is the founder of the Vorau Sisters of Mary. She grew up on the "Kroneggerhof" farm in Wenigzell, the third of seven children. After the death of her mother (1861), she had the idea of making herself available to God and helping people.

In 1865, Barbara Sicharter was ordained and, together with three others, began a monastic life. She dedicated herself to hospital, home and poor nursing care. Barbara acquired a house in Vorau, which she continued to run as a hospital. The house was later extended and renamed a hospital. Barbara Sicharter thus became the founder of a convent and hospital.

This house is now the Marienkrankenhaus Vorau.
