Art protection harmonica Gabalier

The extraordinary, two-meter-high and five-meter-wide stepping stone biotope in the shape of a giant accordion stands as a conspicuous symbol of species protection and thus creates not only valuable living space but also societal awareness for biodiversity.

Designed as a valuable artwork for various small animals from 8.5 tons of stone, moss, and wood by the Austrian species protection initiative BeeWild and Andreas Gabalier in cooperation with Graz artist Thomas Zimmermann, who staged and implemented this stepping stone biotope together with students from the Polytechnical School Pöllau. The ideal location was found with the first Living Patterns Region Nature Park Pöllauer Tal, which serves as a pioneer in harmonizing tourism, agriculture, and nature conservation.

The idea for this special species protection accordion came about at the beginning of the year 2025 between Andreas Gabalier and BeeWild initiator Manfred Hohensinner and was ceremonially presented by both personally to humans and nature on October 15. Together with children from the Pöllau elementary school, the two initiators also lovingly built nesting aids that were subsequently placed in the stepping stone biotope. The focus was primarily on the shared activity: Across generations, they screwed, built, and thus set a strong sign for a green future.
