THE HOME
Novel
THE HOME or the incredible story of the good caregiver Adem Ibrahimović - A novel from southern Austria about aging, arriving – and being sent away.
Southern Burgenland, 2000.
Adem Ibrahimović is a caregiver with heart and soul – and of Bosnian origin. His daily routine in the Kastlbach health center consists of biographical work, loving care, and the persistent attempt to give the patients a little more space and dignity. What he desperately needs himself is Austrian citizenship. Or at least a clerk who doesn’t let his application gather dust for two years. While Austria is upset about a new government, Adem quietly fights against Kafkaesque bureaucracy, an ancient legal situation, and the ghosts of his family history. Suddenly, the fittest seniors in the home appear on the scene – with a plan. Because if the young ones don’t make any changes, then the old ones have to do it.
“THE HOME” is not a feel-good novel. But it is a warm-hearted one. Not a political pamphlet. But highly political. Not a drama. And yet beautifully tearful.
With a fine sense for language and environments, the author tells a story about aging, arriving, and the attempt to become at home in a country that likes to consider itself open-minded – as long as no one looks too closely. The tone: laconic, quirky, with much empathy and a good dose of Austrian bureaucratic absurdity. A novel about humanity, origins – and the question of who actually decides where one belongs. ONDALY
Walter Amon
Walter Amon, born in 1957, wrote Wild West novels in his youth in the style of 'Lassiter'. They remained unfinished. Later, he played guitar in a rock band called Public Energy. A song he wrote with singer Joe Hamilton reached the top of the Austrian charts through Boris Bukowski. After studying law at Karl Franzens University, he went into private enterprise, where he worked for various companies abroad, including in the USA, China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. This was followed by years at various Austrian private radios before he became self-employed and rediscovered his love for writing during this time. Screenplay drafts and a TV series idea titled “D.I.E. 4 - Donausinseleinheit 4” emerged, which was optioned by ORF. His first book "Styrassic Rock“ was published through self-publishing and is a bitterly ironic, satirical narrative about a failed advertising professional and wannabe musician. His second novel “The Home or the Incredible Story of the Good Caregiver Adem Ibrahimović” from the publishing house “Ondaly" is his contribution to a pressing societal issue, which he implements with great empathy, seasoned with wit and verve.
