December 11, 2026       Rattener Advent – on the way to Christmas: “Mettenschicht” at the mining museum
Mettenschicht – a revived tradition from the time of mining
The so-called “Mettenschicht” is a very old tradition of the miners. It was the last shift before Christmas, during which the miners gathered together. The name refers to the Christmas mass following the last worked shift. There was traditional food and a solemn devotion.
Together, the mining museum and the music association Ratten host this traditional pre-Christmas event. The area between the musician's house and the mining museum appears - decorated with a lit Christmas tree, open fire, and strings of lights - in pre-Christmas splendor.
This historical 'shift', the second since the end of mining in 1960 in Ratten and St. Kathrein/H., is accompanied by the Bergknappenmusik and enriched with texts and thoughts by Christine Baumgartner and Franz Mögle.
Culinary offerings remain traditional. There is apple or dried fruit bread and the popular Mettenjause, a lentil stew with sausages.
