December 11, 2026       Ratten Advent – towards Christmas: “Mettenschicht” at the mining museum
Mettenschicht – revived tradition from the time of mining
The so-called “Mettenschicht” is a very old tradition of the miners. It was the last shift before Christmas during which the miners gathered together. The name refers to the Christmas Mass that follows the last finished shift. There was traditional food and a ceremonial devotion.
The mining museum and the Ratten music association jointly organize this traditional pre-Christmas event. The space between the musicians' house and the mining museum appears - decorated with a illuminated Christmas tree, open fire, and fairy lights - in pre-Christmas splendor.
This historical 'shift', the second since the end of mining in 1960 in Ratten and St. Kathrein/H., is accompanied by the mining music and enriched by texts and thoughts from Christine Baumgartner and Franz Mögle.
Culinary offerings remain traditional. There is apple or dried fruit bread and the popular 'Mettenjause', a lentil stew with sausages.
