December 11, 2026       Rattener Advent – on the way to Christmas: “Mettenschicht” at the mining museum
Mettenschicht – revived customs from the mining era
The so-called “Mettenschicht” is a very old tradition of the miners. It was the last shift before Christmas, in which the miners came together. The name refers to the Christmas mass following the last shift worked. There was traditional food and a solemn service.
Together, the mining museum and the music club Ratten organize this traditional pre-Christmas event. The space between the musicians' house and the mining museum appears - decorated with a lit Christmas tree, open fire, and fairy lights - in pre-Christmas splendor.
This historic 'shift', the second since the end of mining in 1960 in Ratten and St. Kathrein/H., is accompanied by the miners' music and enriched with texts and thoughts by Christine Baumgartner and Franz Mögle.
Culinary offerings remain traditional. There is apple or dried pear bread and the popular Mettensnack, a lentil stew with sausage.
