The ascent from the north to the Ennstalerhütte follows the Mühlbach upstream through the valley and finally climbs on marked trails over the Hoher Bärensattel to the hut, where you’re rewarded with a beautiful view of the Buchstein range and the Gesäuse mountains.

This northern approach to the Ennstalerhütte is longer than the route via the Tamischbach, but it’s absolutely worth it—whether you’re heading up or down—thanks to its charming, forest-rich landscape.

From the A9 "Pyhrnautobahn" take exit 67 "Ardning" and continue on the B146 to Ober-Hall. At the roundabout turn onto the B117 and via Weng im Gesäuse to St. Gallen. Before St.Gallen turn left in the direction of Grossreifling.

At the highest point on the Erbsattel, you can see the Kassegg Castle on the right and a little later the turning on the hiking trail is on the right.

From the Mühlbach car park, we follow the forest road to the junction toward the “Kleiner Buchstein”. Since this proud peak demands surefootedness and a head for heights, we choose the more relaxed path that swings left and leads up into the forest. A lonely hunting cabin sits by the trail, then here and there a rustle, birds calling out to warn of strangers, and again and again rewarding views. After endless bends, the forest road finally merges into a trail that leads us up to the Bärensattel, where we soon meet the path coming from the Tamischbach. One last steep climb, then—finally—a bench to rest on. We dig out our drinks to refill our tanks.

On we go, along a comfortable rocky trail that climbs gently to another junction. We read our way through the cluster of signs and cross the path that comes up from Gstatterboden; to the west, the trail heads toward the Luckerter Mauer and the “Teufelsteig”, the via ferrata up the Tieflimauer. We take on the final stretch, already hearing voices and laughter drifting over from the sunny terrace of the Ennstalerhütte. The hut hosts greet us warmly, news is exchanged, and at last we dig into a plate of Gamsgulasch on the terrace—while the Buchstein, lightly dusted with fresh snow, towers before us as a well-earned reward for the climb.

Spend the night at the Ennstal Hut and the next day connect the Tamischbach Tower (easy tour) in 1 1/2 hours

or the Tieflimauer on the normal route (difficult tour) or the Teufelsteig via ferrata

by train and bus only to St.Gallen

By train or bus to Liezen. From there, continue with the Postbus to St. Gallen (bus stop "St. Gallen Hauptplatz").
