2024

Innovation award

On 4 December 2024, the Gesäuse Partner network presented its sixth annual Innovation Award for the most exciting, sustainable and innovative ideas and projects in the region. The idea of recycling fallen timber impressed the jury: ArdningAlm innkeeper Karl Völkl took first place with his "Characteristic trees with stories" project. Silver went to "Zeit" für eine andere Welt (Time for a different world), a high-quality wooden wristwatch for Gesäuse fans by jeweller Heinz Michalka from Liezen, and bronze went to Andrea Stelzl's Genusshaltestelle (gourmet stop) for regional products in Admont. The prizes were awarded during the Gesäuse Partners' end-of-year event at the Stiftskeller in Admont, which was attended by around 100 partners.

1st place

Character trees with stories

The project, which won the 2024 Innovation award, sends a strong signal for the conscious use of our resources. Instead of using trees that are often hundreds of years old as fuel, their value is appreciated and transformed into something unique. Only fallen wood or trees that have to make way for construction projects, for example, are used for production. Cut on site, there is no need to transport the wood at all – contributing to the reduction of emissions.

The wood is processed into unique pieces full of character on a mobile saw, giving it a "second life". The boards are gently dried in the open air over a period of 4 to 8 years and can then be used as high-quality table tops or wall panelling. Whether artists, carpenters or end customers – they can all use this unique material to realise individual projects.

This extraordinary project shows that sustainability, regionality and creativity can go hand in hand. It exemplifies the mindful use of natural resources and sets new standards in the value chain.

2nd place

"TIME" for a different world

The new Gesäuse wristwatch is a symbol of connection to the region. A limited special edition combines apple wood as the main material with robust stainless steel and features the iconic silhouette of the Gesäuse entrance on the dial.

This special timepiece is delivered in a stylish wooden box in the Gesäuse design, which underlines the high-quality character of the watch. Whether for locals, visitors or friends of the region – the Gesäuse watch is an expressive statement that now carries the values and beauty of the Gesäuse out into the world on your wrist.

3rd place

Genusshaltestelle

The Admont gourmet stop, initiated and implemented with great commitment by Andrea Stelzl, is a special meeting place for regionality during the summer months (June to September). In the former asphalt shooting hut at the roundabout in Admont, visitors can purchase high-quality, handcrafted food – all self-service and on a trust basis.

In addition, the concept offers the opportunity to get to know the producers and their businesses, which further increases appreciation for regional products. The central location avoids unnecessary car journeys, which not only protects the environment but also underlines the importance of regional value creation.
