Immerse yourself in the fascinating world of a craft that has been closely linked to life and work at the Styrian Erzberg for centuries. During a tour of the historic Salzer tannery, you will experience how leather was once produced and why this material was of great significance for mining and metallurgy.

Robust leather was essential for equipping miners and smelters – from work shoes to aprons and numerous tools. Without efficient leather production, mining in Eisenerz could not have functioned in this way. The exhibition vividly demonstrates the traditional manufacturing process, original and functional tanning machines from the 1930s, as well as the impressive waterwheel that once powered the tannery and today contributes to the energy supply of the museum.

The Salzer tannery is one of the most significant testimonies of this ancient craft. The location presumably dates back to the early Middle Ages, and the tannery has been documented since 1548. After an extensive revitalization by a dedicated association, the building is now a unique museum throughout Austria and has held the title “Styrian Landmark” since 2015.

The holiday tours take place on Thursday, July 16, Thursday, August 13, Friday, August 28, and Friday, September 4, 2026 at 2.30 p.m. in the Salzer Tannery Museum. Registration is required at least 2 hours before the start of the tour at +43 3848 32 701.
