Originally, it was the last shift before Christmas, before the comrades could escape for a short time from the dangers of the underground tunnels. Today, this last shift is still celebrated, although there has not been any underground mining for several decades now.
In its current form, the Mettenschicht in Eisenerz has existed since 1984 – back then, mining inspector Anton Manfreda revived this tradition.
The organization of the Mettenschicht has been entrusted to the Montanhistorische Verein Österreich (MHVÖ) and the Knappschaftsverein Eisenerz-Radmer-Vordernberg since 1984.
With the old team train of the miners, "the Katl," people travel into the Franz tunnel and make their way to the Barbaranische, where a holy mass with music and singing is held.
