The traditional Barbarafeier in Leoben invites you to honor the mining traditions and Saint Barbara as the patron saint of miners with a festive mass in the parish church of St. Xaver, a devotion at the Barbarakapelle in Seegraben, and a subsequent gathering.
Living customs, festive sounds, and the connection to mining tradition: On Friday, December 4, 2026, at 9.00 a.m., the traditional Barbarafeierlichkeiten in honor of Saint Barbara, the patron saint of miners, will take place in Leoben.
The festive opening will be the mass at the parish church of St. Xaver in Leoben, celebrated together with auxiliary bishop Johannes Freitag. Numerous traditional associations and institutions will participate in the mass, giving it a special atmosphere with festive costumes, music, and the preservation of mining customs.
Participants include the costume association and miners' guild Steirerherzen Seegraben, the mountain chapel Leoben-Seegraben, the factory choir Donawitz, as well as the elementary school Leoben-Stadt.
Following the mass, a devotion will take place at the Barbarakapelle in Seegraben. A free bus shuttle will be available for visitors to transport them from the parish church to the Barbarakapelle.
Afterwards, the celebrations invite everyone to a communal gathering at the clubhouse of the costume association Steirerherzen Seegraben.
The Barbarafeier offers a special opportunity to commemorate the patron saint of miners, to keep the history of mining in Leoben alive, and to cultivate the community around mining traditions. The entire population is warmly invited to participate in the celebrations.
