A varied mountain hike in the Eisenerz Alps up to the Hochstein, featuring a gentle
ascent through the woods and expansive alpine pastures – including the chance to spot marmots and
a slightly challenging final stretch.

The Hochstein is one of the most scenic peaks in the Eisenerz Alps and offers a varied mountain hike through forests, alpine pastures and alpine landscapes. Even during the ascent, impressive views of the surrounding mountains of Upper Styria open up time and again. The area around the Moosalm is particularly charming, with its vast alpine pastures and tranquil natural landscape.
From the Hochtörl, the route becomes more alpine and leads over partly stony terrain to the summit of the Hochstein. Sure-footedness and a good level of fitness are an advantage here. Once at the summit, an impressive panorama awaits, stretching across the Eisenerz Alps as far as the Hochschwab massif.
The tour is particularly suitable for experienced hikers who appreciate peaceful and uncrowded mountain walks in varied countryside.

From Vienna/Graz:
Take the S6 Semmering Expressway to Leoben West, then follow the B115 towards Trofaiach. Continue along the Gößgraben to the Moosalm car park.
From Salzburg/Liezen:
Take the A9 Pyhrn motorway and the B113 towards Trieben/Rottenmann, then take the B115 to Trofaiach and continue into the Gößgraben valley.
From Carinthia:
Take the S36 Murtal Expressway towards Leoben and continue on the B115 to Trofaiach. From there, head into the Gößgraben valley to the Moosalm car park.
Parking is available directly at the starting point at the Moosalm car park.

The tour starts at the Moosalm car park in Gößgraben near Trofaiach. The route begins with a gentle climb along a forest track before turning into the woods and continuing steadily uphill. Once out of the forest, the terrain opens up and you reach the Moosalm. This is where the unmarked section towards the Hochstein begins. Passing the alpine buildings on the right, a clearly visible path by a fence continues towards the Hochtörl, the pass between the Stadelstein and the Hochstein.
The path runs past scattered fields of mountain pine to Hochtörl. From there, the route continues to the right over terrain that is partly steep and rocky in places, leading to the summit of the Hochstein. The final ascent is somewhat more alpine in character, but easily walkable. At the summit, there is an impressive view of the mountain world of the Eisenerz Alps.
The descent follows the same route.

Packing your rucksack properly makes things much easier: pack the heavy items first. Your water bottle should always be within easy reach in a side pocket. Items you’ll need frequently, such as sunglasses, a camera or a hiking map, should go on top. An emergency kit, including blister plasters, belongs in every rucksack, and dressing in layers is always recommended!
