High above Maierhofen lies the Thaller family's wine castle, nestled among vine cultures and blooming gardens, on the way to Fürstenfeld, in the thermal volcanic region of Styria. As a typical family-run business, the Thaller family lives, works, and thinks in generations. Currently, five of the six siblings are responsible for the operation and combine their strengths for a common mission at the estate. More than 40 years ago, the foundation for the production of excellent wines was laid here, establishing the cornerstone for continuous and quality-oriented development. With the opening of the wine castle in 2006, a crown was placed on this foundation, creating a total work of art to make wine an experience for all the senses and to create a place for everyone. A meeting place was born, which today symbolizes the symbiosis between man, nature, and enjoyment, fostering joy in life and allowing for the sharing of unique moments. A place to stop, linger & enjoy In a magnificent location, on a ridge with an impressive view of Riegersburg, the Thaller family treats you to delicacies from the volcanic region of Styria. The volcanic region of Styria offers numerous culinary highlights. Vulcan ham, wild specialties, Fink's delicacies, refined cheese specialties from Fromagerie Riegersburg and Arzberger Stollenkäse, as well as homemade delights accompany the carefully prepared wines! The family is not only passionate about regionality but also about seasonality. From asparagus to mushrooms to pumpkins, each season brings its specialties, lovingly presented on the plate!

THE GREIßLEREI
The Greißlerei is the first docking point at the estate. It’s where you meet, immerse yourself in the wines, and explore the culinary diversity of the volcanic region. Winemaker Katharina and her Mathias warmly welcome you, guide you on the path of wine, and are always open for informed conversations.

THE WINERY
Here, noble vines have historically taken root in the womb of the earth! The family cultivates around 25 hectares of vineyard on gentle hills. Here, the winemaker siblings Katharina and Karl Gregor take charge. In addition to excellent whites (30%), it’s especially the expressive red wines (70%) that reach high maturity. The varietal range includes the typical Styrian varieties such as Pinot Blanc, Welschriesling, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay, and in the red wine sector goes deep with indigenous Zweigelt, up to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Shiraz. The impressive barrel cellar houses around 500 barrique barrels from different vintages, filled mainly with red wines from special years – a stage for delightful events – and the living room for wine until its completion. The production cellar, no less interesting and well-equipped for processing, contains large stainless steel tanks for fermentation and storage, mainly of white grape varieties, as well as its own bottling plant and storage facility for finished wine bottles. In the pressing house on the upper floor, a high level of quality maximization is pursued during the harvest phase, as the red grape varieties are allowed to ferment in mash fermentation tanks for several days or even weeks to extract the full color and aromatic substances from the grapes. Red wines need not only space but especially time, which is why Katharina and Karl G. release their red wines for sale only after five to six years.
