Landmark & popular excursion destination of Styria
The Riegersburg magnificently towers over an extinct volcano. 7 gates, 11 bastions, 4 kilometers of defensive walls, and 2 moats protect the castle! The best way to explore this fortress is via the historical footpath or adventurously via the Leopold climbing route. Families with children can enjoy an exciting treasure hunt with the castle ghost Rüdiger. If you want to go faster, you can comfortably take the castle lift.
Another highlight is the castle tavern with a large beer garden and a great playground, including a wonderful view over the Styrian hills! The spectacular bird of prey flight show fascinates young and old and rounds off the Riegersburg excursion.
In the castle, the historical state rooms, courtyards, as well as the witch, weapons, and castle museum are fascinating:
The castle museum with its state rooms offers a journey into the history of Riegersburg in the 17th century. Two women's fates during the time of the Turkish wars, forced labor, and witch hunts, but also baroque zest for life and festival culture.
The witch museum was redesigned in 2017 to be more modern. Videos and sound installations, as well as informative texts, now convey an understandable picture of a time and mindset that are, on one hand, foreign to us, but on the other hand, perhaps all too familiar. Themes like exclusion, persecution, etc. are as relevant as ever.
The weapons museum presents armor and swords, cutting and stabbing weapons, rifles, and pistols. Craftsmanship and technical skills from 400 years. Defense and attack, hunting and pleasure.
Tips for children:
Treasure hunt: The castle ghost Rüdiger has hidden a letter in each of the 7 gates of the Riegersburg. It doesn't matter whether you go up the castle or come from the lift – it makes no difference when searching. All 7 letters form a solution word, it just needs to be put together correctly – and then you will receive a small reward! Good luck – you can do it!
A special audioguide for children aged 6 to 14 guides you through the three museums of Riegersburg with simple texts.
Friend book rally
Rüdiger always looks forward to visits from friends and even has his own friend book in his Rüdiger room where everyone can sign in. There are 6 Rüdiger pictures with numbers hidden in the castle. Whoever finds them can certainly open the locked chest and sign in the friend book! We wish you lots of fun and success in the friend book rally!
Tours & visits:
The impressive castle interiors can be individually visited during opening hours (we recommend our audioguides – an exciting audioguide also for children!), and there are also scheduled tours.
