The motorcycle season kicks off this year in Fohnsdorf
On May 2 and 3, world champions, professionals, amateurs, and children will showcase their skills on two wheels at the Supermoto race at the FahrAktivZentrum Fohnsdorf. With international participants from Italy, Finland, the Czech Republic, and Hungary, among others, as well as competitors in the popular Grenzland Cup, up to 200 participants are expected in the Murtal valley. “Simply put, Supermoto bikes are motocross bikes with slick tires for asphalt. This allows for high cornering speeds and wide drift angles, yet you can still ride over rough terrain,” explains Keke Platzer of organizer Driven Events, describing the appeal of this sport. Under the motto #localswelcome, local riders are also warmly invited to participate with their Supermoto bikes. Those interested can contact office@drivenevents.at or call 0660/25 66 205.
FIM World Championship title
Last year, not only did an Austrian, Lukas Höllbacher, win the individual world championship title in the premier S1 class, but the Austrian team also claimed the FIM World Championship title in the Nations Cup. The Austrian Motorsport Federation’s Supermoto National Championship is equally strong, ranking among the best championships in Europe. The classes are divided into children’s classes ranging from 50cc to 85cc, amateurs (beginner and elite), S3 juniors and over-50s, as well as the premier S1 class. Another class is reserved for those who ride exclusively on asphalt. The last Supermoto races in the Murtal region took place quite some time ago—including events at the A1-Ring and later at the Red Bull Ring’s Driving Center.
Brand-new route
The brand-new, 1.5-kilometer track at FAZ Fohnsdorf, located in the Aichdorf district on Grazer Straße, features high-speed sections as well as tight corners and a roundabout with spectacular banking. There’s also an off-road section with double banked turns and jumps. “Spectators can get a great view of the racetrack from three different fan zones—complete with food and drink, of course, and partially sheltered from bad weather,” says Platzer. Together with co-organizer Kevin Kaltenegger, he aims to introduce this spectator-friendly sport to a new audience. “For a small fee, visitors can get up close to the action. The paddock is open to ticket holders, and the riders are always up for a chat about racing.”
In addition to the races, there will also be a children’s program, a stunt show, a performance of the national anthem by the Fohnsdorf Mountain Band, and a sports car and motorsports exhibition. Tickets are already available at the Fohnsdorf ticket outlets at FAZ (Fahrtechnikstraße), Trafik Sabrina Ornigg (Hauptstraße), and Hair Studio Medina (Judenburger Straße). Day tickets cost 10 euros, weekend tickets 15 euros—children under 15 accompanied by an adult are admitted free of charge.
